Opening day jitters did not keep us from posting a "Win." Hartland had a perfect game through 3 innings without recording a strikeout. We were striking the ball well, but hitting them right at their guys. Then, in the 4th Lemke led off and beat out an infield single which opened the floodgates and we scored 6 runs. Barnes and Graf also had good days at the plate (each recording 2 rbi) and Lemke hit a booming double and scored in the 5th. Our pitchers were outstanding and did an excellent job of keeping their hitters off-balance. Horneffer started the game and dominated the top of their order; while Barnes went 3 2/3rds innings and got the win. This game saw Wernicke finally return to the mound following a lengthy stint on the DL. With the exception of one hanging curve, he was perfect! The boys showed excellent heart against a surprising Hartland team. We clearly demonstrated our ability to hang in there for as long as it takes. There is absolutely no "give up" in these Eagles!

Due to a scheduling snafu, we didn't get this game underway until well past 6:00. Once play began, Horneffer started and went 3 2/3rds innings on the way to his first victory of the young season. Sandy picked up the middle 2 2/3rds innings in relief and Barnes came in at the end to log his first save of the year. In the 1st inning we managed to plate a run despite the fact that our base runners appeared to be asleep on the base paths. We awoke in the 3rd when Werchowski, Zimmerman and Carnell led off with singles and Barnes drove in 2 with a liner to left center. Graf scored in the 4th after drawing a lead-off walk. Sandy dropped a double down the right field line with 2 outs in the 5th and we ended up plating 3 runs in the frame. In our final at bat, Serbiak led off with a single and it looked like he might be stranded at 3rd before the top of the order staged another 2-out rally capped off by Sandy's first homerun of the season. Our defense showed improvement and the game was won by our continued stellar play in the outfield.

This game began on a Saturday and didn't end until Thursday night. We played an inning before the rain on Saturday and definitely got their attention. When we travelled back to their place we played like a couple of prize fighters going toe-to-toe; trading knockout punches one right after another. It's true they hung a 8 spot on us in the 4th frame, but they didn't really beat us; so much as we beat ourselves. We ran ourselves out of 3 separate innings making five outs on the base paths; including 3 outs between 3rd base and home. We answered their 8 run inning by putting up 5 runs in the next frame (with nobody out), but then.... Oh well, the sun'll come up tomorrow. And we'll be ready to play on!

Sometimes baseball is like ballet for boys and other times it should be played in an octagon like an MMA match. This was one of the latter type of games. They had us 10-4 after 4 1/2 innings. In the 5th Werchowski got things started with a little blooper behind second base and then, when Zimmerman got up and put one in almost the exact same spot, their fielders collided and their second baseman was unable to continue; forcing the Bulldogs to finish the game with only 8 fielders. Our boys took full advantage of the situation. Andrae knocked in two with a liner over short and Serbiak lined a double down the third base line to score what turned out to be the game winning run. Sandy started and worked an inning, Horneffer pitched three innings and Barnes came in to pitch the final two frames and notch his second win of the season. At the plate, Horneffer hit a single, double and triple and scored 3 runs. Lemke hit a pair of triples and a double and also scored 3 times. Graf and Carnell each had 2 and Andrae had 3 rbi. Although we left plenty of room for improvement, it sure was good to hang in there and get the win. I can't imagine facing a team more desirous of a win then our worthy crosstown rivals. Clearly, the Eagles are willing to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to prevail!

Friday night, opening game of the Memorial Weekend tournament, we faced the home team on their home field. It took us a while to adjust to the different distances, but in the end we prevailed. Andrae started a nice two-out rally in the 4th inning with a 10-pitch at bat and a little bloop single. Serbiak threw two more scoreless innings (adding significantly to his legend) and Zimmerman and Graf both did a fine job in relief. Nice start to what will almost certainly be a memorable weekend of baseball.

To be the top seeded team in the championship round of the tournament we had to beat this team and the next and give up a total of 4 runs or less. After giving up a run in the 1st, our bevy of pitchers shut them down. Andrae pitched in the 1st. Lemke had a 1, 2, 3 five pitch inning and Werchowski needed just 10 pitches to complete his frame. Sandy worked the final 3 innings and picked up the win. Zimmerman hit a single, double and triple and knocked in 3 runs while scoring 2 others. Sandy and Lemke each went 3 for 3.

Facing our second crosstown rival in five days, we started slowly and finished with a bang when we sent 16 men to the plate and scored 11 runs on 12 hits in the 5th inning. Carnell went 4 for 4 with 2 rbi and 2 runs scored. Lemke went 2 for 3 with 3 rbi. Barnes and Horneffer went 3 for 4. Werchowski added a couple of hits and pitched another scoreless inning. Graf pitched an inning and a third and Sandy went 2 and 2/3rds; giving up just one hit, striking out 3 and notching his second win of the day. And the Eagles waltzed into the championship round of the tournament with our first number one seed, ever!

Three pitchers combined to 2-hit the West Allis squad; with Serbiak starting and going 3 innings to pick up his second win of the tournament. Lemke got ahold of a 2-strike pitch and it didn't come down until it was several feet over the center field fence. Horneffer hit a single, double & triple and knocked in 3. Wernicke walked and scored a run and Carnell got on base and scored 3 times.

Horneffer started the game and pitched three innings of shut-out ball with 6 strikeouts. We were hitless until the 3rd when we loaded the bases with one out, but we only managed to score 1 run and in their next at-bat Beckum answered with a run. After that, Barnes shut them out and earned the W (fanning 5 in his 3 innings of work). Horneffer, who earned tournament MVP honors, led off the bottom of the 6th with a double. Lemke laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved him to third and Serbiak scored him with another perfect (walk-off) bunt down the third base line. And for the first time in our 3 year history, the Eagles emerged as tournament champions!!!

The lethal combination of playing this game in a cow pasture with foot long grass and our lack of hustle on defense allowed MF to hang a 7 spot on us early in the game and, although we battled back courageously, we came up a run short at the end. Sandy started the game and looked good in the 1st. He pitched his way through trouble in the 2nd and finished very strong in the 3rd. Serbiak and Barnes each threw well in relief. At the plate, Zimmerman, Graf and Sandy each went 2 for 3 and together batted in 7 of our runs. This is two years in a row this team has beaten us by 1 run (somebody make a note of that).

Game one of the Waukesha tournament matched us against a fine Waukesha club, whom you will recall we beat last year in the Wind Lake tournament. We never had a chance in this one. While they hit the ball well, they also had a handful of seeing eye singles and we ran ourselves out of a couple of big innings. Let's move on.

Second game of pool play. After the tournament championship game loss to these guys that ended our season last year it was a pretty sure bet that anyone who took the field wearing a Bombers jersey was in for a beat down. Wernicke pitched 1 2/3rds innings and picked up his the win and Wechowski and Zimmerman looked strong in relief. Everyone hit well. Sandy scored 4 times, Werchowski and Andrae had 3 rbi a piece and Horneffer had 4.
