In the semifinal game of the Waukesha tournament we faced the Storm, a WSYBL A division team we beat last year 5-3.  If it had been a 4 inning game they would have shut us out on 4 hits, but it wasn't. We came out a little tight, booted the ball around a bit and fell down 2-0.  We didn't really start rolling until Lemke snuffed out their 3rd inning rally with a great diving catch of a line shot down the left field line.  Horneffer got the start and gave us 3 solid innings.  Sandy followed with 2 scoreless innings (picking up the win) and Barnes shut them down in the final frame (picking up his 2nd save of the season).  In the 5th, Werchowski lined a double up the alley and scored on Barnes' single.  Then, with 2 outs, a Horneffer single followed by a Graf double and a Lemke single plated 3 more runs and once again sent the Storm down in defeat.

Of the 24 quality teams in the Waukesha tournament, only 4 were playing on Sunday night and we were one of those teams.  Other than that, this game never happened, you never saw me and we never had this conversation.

Finally, back at home to face a division rival.  The score was tied until the bottom of the 2nd when we unleashed an assault that sent 11 men to the plate notching 8 hits (including 2 doubles and 2 triples) and scoring 7 runs.  Horneffer started and picked up the win and Sandy pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief; striking out 4.  Sandy went 3 for 3, scored 3 runs and batted in 2.  Carnell, Barnes, Horneffer, Lemke, Zimmerman and Serbiak all had multi-hit performances.

We put forth one of our finest efforts of the year as we beat the Orioles and picked up our first league win against an A division team.  Horneffer started and pitched 4 scoreless innings on the way to his 3rd win of the year.  Barnes and Sandy each pitched a nearly flawless inning in relief.  Carnell went 3 for 4; knocking in a run and scoring 3 times. Horneffer was 3 for 3 with 4 rbi.  Andrae, Barnes and Lemke also had multi-hit games.

The one that got away.  We sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the 1st inning.  We had 7 hits, but only scored 4 runs and left the bases loaded.  In the 2nd we scored 3 more runs and despite some poor base running and mental mistakes we began celebrating our 7-1 victory.  Unfortunately, the game wasn't over and nobody informed the other team that they had lost.  So, in the 4th with 2 outs, when we couldn't find a pitcher who could throw a strike, they caught us back on our heels and scored 8 runs (on 4 hits, 6 walks and 2 errors).  As our laughter turned to tears, the boys started pressing at the plate and continued to get themselves out on the base paths.  The bottom line: we didn't deserve to win this one and we didn't.  Justice served.  Lesson learned.

The Owls score once in the 1st on a couple of "knob job" bloop singles. We came right back and scored 3 in the 1st and another in the 2nd.  We started to let up on the throttle and they scored 4 in the 4th to go ahead by a run.  Then, in the bottom of the 4th we sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs on 8 hits.  Deuce Barnes came in to shut them down and earn his 5th win of the season.  Sandy went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 4 rbi.  Barnes also went 3 for 4 and scored 3 times.  Lemke, Andrae and Graf had multiple hit games.

Another one just like the other one.  Seeking to avenge their recent "mercy" loss a couple weeks ago, the Pirates came out and with a bunt single and 3 bloop hits, combined with 2 Eagle errors, hung a 5 spot on us in the 1st inning. But we were unfazed.  We were nonplussed.  We chipped away at their lead; scoring 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and the 4th and 4 in the 5th.  Having worked his way through the 1st, Sandy shut the door for 3 more innings. After shutting down the Pirates in the top of the 4th on 8 pitches, Sandy left the mound with the Eagles behind 6-5.  The prospects for him picking up his 4th win of the year looked rather bleak when, with 2 on in the bottom of the 4th Sandy stepped up to the plate and popped out to the 3rd baseman. Fortunately, Lemke continued his MVP style hitting and lined a 2-out, bases-clearing single up the alley in right-center.  Then, in the top of the 5th the Pirates lead-off hitter lined a double to left.  Horneffer, pitching in relief, stranded him there and carried on to pick up his 1st save of the season. In the top of the 6th the Pirates mounted a 2-out rally and threatened to score the tying run on yet another blooper just out of Sandy's reach at short.  Sandy had a different idea, however, as he picked up the ball, spun and fired a strike to Graf who applied a tatoo-like tag to the runner a step shy of home plate.  Game over!  Lemke put in another stellar performance at the plate; going 3 for 3 with a double and a triple; 2 runs scored and 3 rbi.  How about that?!

Another road win against an A Division opponent.  The Eagles logged their 7th come-from-behind win of the year; moving their league record to 8-3 and their overall record to 15-5.  After allowing 4 runs in the 1st (3 earned), starting pitcher Barnes settled in nicely and shut down the Mavericks through the 3rd inning on just 3 hits.  Horneffer came in and got the final 9 outs on 2 hits; allowing no earned runs and striking out 3 on his way to picking up his 4th win of the year.  Carnell led off the game with a walk and promptly stole second. Barnes took a full count pitch to left and we were up a run before they even knew they were in a game.  Graf lined a 2-out single up the middle to score Barnes.  Then, we fell behind 4-2 but came right back in the top of the 2nd.  With the bases loaded following a botched fielder's choice, Barnes stepped in and lined the first pitch he saw down the left field line for a double that scored 3.  Having fallen behind 7-6 in the 4th, Sandy led off the 5th with a 9-pitch at bat that resulted in a walk.  Lemke followed with another walk before Graf plated a run with a fielder's choice and Andrae put us up to stay with a run scoring single.  We added 2 insurance runs in the 6th on back-to-back singles by Barnes and Sandy.  Barnes had another great game at the plate; going 3 for 4 scoring 2 runs and knocking in 3 more while adding 4 stolen bases.

Capping off a perfect day that started at Miller Park and progressed through rousing laser tag matches, the Eagles tallied another "mercy" (come-from-behind) win on the road against an A Division team.  Sandy pitched the first 4 innings on the way to his 5th win and had a 4 pitch inning (against 4 different batters).  Horneffer went 4 for 4 with 2 rbi and a run scored.  Andrae went 3 for 3; scoring 3 times and batting 1.  After falling behind in the 1st inning, we tied it in the 2nd and went ahead in the 3rd.  After they failed to put up a run in the bottom of the 3rd we scored 4 in the 4th.  When they answered by scoring 1 run in the bottom of the 4th our bats came alive and we took the game away from them by scoring 8 in the 5th.

Most teams would love to have our problems, but man, I hate being up 7-1 in the 3rd!  We started off confounding their bevy of fastball hitters with Werchowski and Horneffer throwing nothing but off-speed pitches.  Meanwhile, our hitters teed-off.  But with a quality team like Oak Creek you can't rest and you can't stop playing.  They scored 7 runs in the 4th and 5th and took the lead 8-7.  Our hitters kept their cool, though, sending 9 men to the plate in the top of the 6th and scoring 4 runs to retake the lead.  But alas, it wasn't meant to be.
